How to Buy Tickets in Japan

public transport

Japan’s train network is one of the most efficient in the world, but for first-time visitors, using ticket machines can be a bit intimidating.

In our latest YouTube video, we walk you through the process step-by-step, showing you two ways to buy tickets from Japanese ticket machines: selecting by fare amount and searching by station name.

Method 1: Buying Tickets by Fare Amount

When you know the fare price to your destination, this method can be the quickest. Here’s how it works:

  1. Check the fare map above the ticket machine to find your destination’s fare.
  2. Select the fare amount on the ticket machine screen.
  3. Insert cash or use a supported card to complete your purchase.

This method is particularly helpful if your station has multiple fare options or if you’re traveling somewhere close by.

Method 2: Buying Tickets by Station Name

If you’re unsure of the fare, you can also search by station name. Here’s what to do:

  1. Choose the “Search by Station” option on the ticket machine.
  2. Type in the name of your destination station using the touchscreen keyboard.
  3. Once your station appears, select it and proceed to payment.

This method is ideal for longer journeys where fare prices vary based on distance.

Additional Tips

  • Language Options: Most ticket machines offer an English language setting. Look for the “English” button, usually on the top right corner of the screen.
  • Keep Small Change Handy: Many machines are cash-based and may not accept larger bills or certain international credit cards.
