Japan’s train network is one of the most efficient in the world, but for first-time visitors, using ticket machines can be a bit intimidating.
In our latest YouTube video, we walk you through the process step-by-step, showing you two ways to buy tickets from Japanese ticket machines: selecting by fare amount and searching by station name.
Method 1: Buying Tickets by Fare Amount
When you know the fare price to your destination, this method can be the quickest. Here’s how it works:
- Check the fare map above the ticket machine to find your destination’s fare.
- Select the fare amount on the ticket machine screen.
- Insert cash or use a supported card to complete your purchase.
This method is particularly helpful if your station has multiple fare options or if you’re traveling somewhere close by.
Method 2: Buying Tickets by Station Name
If you’re unsure of the fare, you can also search by station name. Here’s what to do:
- Choose the “Search by Station” option on the ticket machine.
- Type in the name of your destination station using the touchscreen keyboard.
- Once your station appears, select it and proceed to payment.
This method is ideal for longer journeys where fare prices vary based on distance.
Additional Tips
- Language Options: Most ticket machines offer an English language setting. Look for the “English” button, usually on the top right corner of the screen.
- Keep Small Change Handy: Many machines are cash-based and may not accept larger bills or certain international credit cards.
